In a shockingly anti-internet sentiment, the website Pinterest all but declared that it hates cats. Below is a screen shot from their Animal board, on which they categorize/assemble all pinned content that is about animals and/or things for animals. As you can clearly see, the Animal category is further divided into sub-categories/related interests, which include, among other things, dogs, puppies, and pugs.
Furthermore, three of the first five images/links are of dogs. One of those five is a Marimekko print of Ginkgo leaves, so clearly the sorting algorithm has its flaws, but I do not believe that exonerates Pinterest for its clear ignorance of cats.
Made up statistics reveal that 99.7 per cent of internet users love cats, so the fact that Pinterest would so overtly and aggressively choose to display its disdain for the furry felines is, without a doubt, astounding.
I don’t want this post to be misinterpreted as me disliking dogs. Quite the opposite, or exactly the opposite, if you will—I do not dislike dogs. But someone has to shed light on this injustice and stick up for cats.
In actual real statistics (posted to TechCrunch in December 2013, and again Forbes in 2014), Pinterest has surpassed Twitter to become to the third most popular social media website used by U.S. adults, behind Facebook (number one) and LinkedIn (number two, ugh, gross). Knowing these numbers, it would be irresponsible for someone not to step up and say, “Hey cat-haters, it’s time to open your dog-and-ginkgo-lovin’ minds and accept that in 2014 we should love and provide sub-categories/related interest suggestions for all animals (and foliage).” So, I’ll be that person: “Hey cat-haters, it’s time to open your dog-and-ginkgo-lovin’ minds and accept that in 2014 we should love and provide sub-categories/related interest suggestions for all animals (and foliage).”
Take this post as a call to arms! Attention all Pinterest users: log on to your profile right now and create a board dedicated to your favourite animal—it doesn’t even have to be cats, I’m not unreasonable. (But please avoid making a board about dogs, puppies, pugs. It would just really help to keep us on message.) Help end the cat discrimination by taking a stand and helping the suits at Pinterest realise that all animals should be classified as related interests, or none of them should! *chanting* All or none! All or none! All or none! All or none! *deep breath* All or none! All or none! …
Since actions speak louder than words, here are a few pictures that you can pin to get you started:

Those dogs in the photobooth are pretty cute, though.
