Get Your Fash-On

It’s Oscar night and the red carpet pre-show is already under way. And it has been for hours! The pre-show is even longer than the actual show. I’m not sure when the red carpet coverage became such a huge deal, but I’m mostly glad it has. I love checking out what everyone is wearing, both for the beautiful gowns as well as the horrible fashion misses.

As far as award show season goes, the Academy Awards is the classiest, most anticipated show in the bunch. So with all this pomp and ceremony why, then, do the Oscars still produce some of the strangest fashions to hit the red carpet? The following is a list of my favourite fashion blunders from Oscars past:

.
Gwyneth Paltrow (2002)

Starting with the best of the worst, Gwyneth’s top is a little bit too reminiscent of the gym tank you probably should have thrown out a few power pump classes ago.
.
Demi Moore (1989)

1989 is never an acceptable excuse to wear lace-trimmed bicycle shorts to a formal (and televised) event. But man, she’s loving it, isn’t she?
.
Uma Thurman (2004)

You gotta give her points, though, for best use of hotel sheets.
.
Whoopi Goldberg (1993)

I’m not sure anyone knows what Whoopi was going for with this look but I like to think it’s a cross between Willy Wonka and Drop Dead Fred. But, thanks to her many costume changes during her 1999-hosting stint, this is not nearly the craziest things she’s worn at the Oscars.
.
Sally Kirkland (2007)

What is this? No! The peek-a-boob look is only barely acceptable at the Oscars when Halle Berry does it!
.
Bjork (2001)

Pulling a Lady Gaga even before Lady Gaga, who could forget the infamous Swan Dress. This definitely goes down in Oscar fashion history. For the record, I think the shoes are way more offensive than the dress.
.
Barbra Streisand (1969)

I’m of the firm opinion that Babs can do no wrong, however, this shimmery see-through pant suit is getting close. But she won best actress that year so I guess she can do whatever she wants!
.
Pamela Anderson (2001)
pamela-anderson
Technically this was at the Oscar’s Vanity Fair after party, but when everyone around you is wearing the best of Givenchy, Dior, Versace, Prada, and Valentino, is it really the right place to sport something from Levi’s shorter than short collection?
.
Geena Davis (1992)

There are several things amiss with this look including the pairing of black tights with a white dress, and the armpit length satin gloves, but there is also one thing very right: THOSE LEGS! You go Dottie.
.
Lizzy Gardiner (1994)
lizzie
As a costume designer herself, I’m sure Lizzy knew everyone would hate this American Express creation, but she wore it anyway and collected an Oscar for her designs in Priscilla, Queen of the Desert at the same time!
.
Trey Parker & Matt Stone (2000)
72nd Annual Academy Awards - Arrival
Nominated for their song “Blame Canada” from the South Park movie, Matt & Trey didn’t disappoint on the humour front when they showed up on the red carpet wearing outfits inspired by J.Lo and Gwyneth Paltrow.Honourable mention goes to their friend in the furry blue suit.
.
Cher (1986)

Fuck, Cher is the best. I can’t even say this is a fashion faux pas. Look at her, she rocks it. She deserves her own Oscar looks list.
.
Note: I have made a list of amazing Cher Oscar outfits, it’s on Listicle.co, as is the original version of this terrible fashions lists. Apparently you need to sign up to the website to see these lists, which is a bit annoying but if you’re into reading lists of things (especially ones written by me!) then give it a try, see if you like it!
