Happy Valentine’s Day!
I dig any day that encourages us to show love and admiration for the people in our lives. And, heck, to strangers, too, why not? It’s up to you whether you decide to “be a consumer” on this day (and yes, you should love and show love everyday but a specific day where people put in a little extra effort—and are greeted with lovely pink and red decor around town—is hardly bad).
I’m definitely over the argument that it’s a made up day for the benefit of the greeting card and candy industries. You know what? A lot of people like cards and candy. People say that gestures made on Valentine’s Day aren’t sincere, because someone told you to do it, and that the same (or smaller) gesture on any other day of the year would mean more. Most of the people who make this argument aren’t the same people who on a random day of the year, say April 19, will come home with a box of chocolates and a cheesy homespun poem. The people who do those kinds of things are the same people who also do something on Valentine’s Day, because it’s nice to be nice!
And what of those people who are in relationships with people who aren’t good at doting, or making grand statements of love. Would you take away the one day when they can get such a thing? Come on. Have a heart. A candy heart…with words on it…like Be Mine, or So Fine.
We can’t forget about that guy who walks around restaurants trying to sell single flowers to people who look like they’re on dates (or job interviews that just got awkward); what about that guy? This is the one day of the year people actually give him a break and buy a damn flower.
I’m just saying that there’s nothing wrong with a little love-injection into what would be an otherwise regular day. It doesn’t have to be about romantic love, either. Just love.
This is what I am listening to on this fine Valentine’s Day afternoon. I like to kick it old school. If you want to slip into an old fashion love coma, now’s your chance. Sit back, relax (but not too much if you’re at work right now), and drift away on the heartfelt waves of Frankie, Ella, and their friends.
I tried to make this a cute pink colour, but I got lost in HTML and all I could come up with was black. But I’m thinking pink!
