One Night; In and Out [September 28, 2009]

(With Ron)

At a bar called The Maltings with a live band playing Bob Dylan music. Got there at closing time (11 PM). There is a dog here (Lab?Retriever?) He is very shaggy, very blonde, very old, very big, and very cute. He is sleeping at Ron’s feet.

It is 2:20 AM and I am in bed at Jennie’s house. We just watched a movie called “Boy in Stripped Pajamas” about a German boy who befriends a Jewish child in a concentration camp (from either side of a fence). It was sad but the ending was so shocking and abrupt that it left your mouth agape rather than being overly emotional. It was not a surprise ending but still shocking and unbelievable. The most emotional part was when Bruno (the German boy) realised his father (a Nazi commander) was doing bad things and he felt ashamed and lost pride in his father for the first time.

Today I worked my first day at the Coney Street Cornish Pasty Bakery. Ron got me the job. He works at the other shop on Colliergate. I like it. It reminded me a lot of Pharao’s Pita. It’s only a part time position (for now) so I still need to find something else to help pay the bills (once I finally get bills).

Jennie’s cat Tiger/Tinkerbell is sleeping on my lap while I write in my notebook.

I walked by The Press building today (York’s local newspaper) – will stop by soon to enquire about jobs.

I am staying in the attic room at Jennie’s house. The room is big (bigger than Jennie’s room) but it’s unlettable because there are no stairs leading to it, only a ladder. I am impressed that Tiger can climb up and down a ladder.

Since the climb is so steep I decided it would be best if I did not drink excessively while staying with Jennie.

The room is square with a multi-angled ceiling. There is a window on the ceiling that opens but it’s also covered in what looks to be bird poop of some kind. There is a little 3-foot high door next to a high built-in bookcase. Along the next wall there is a radiator, a blue oil (or acrylic) painting done by the guy who lived here before, a full sized door, and another blue painting. The next wall has the bed on it and another tiny door (there also seems to be a lot of blankets and pillows piled around the room). Despite all the doors around the room, the door to the room is, of course, in the floor along the remaining wall. [In my notebook I have drawn a sketch of the room.]

Darrell is coming to visit tomorrow! I haven’t seen Darrell since Michelle’s wedding in July! I’m excited. We’re going to go out! Ron has Wednesday off (the next day) but I have to work at 10 AM! Oh, the sacrifices you make for a night out with friends.

Work – The reason I got hired was because another girl’s first day was yesterday and she got fired at the end of it! At the end of my first shift the owner/my boss, Richard, told me I did a great job, so I hope that is a good sign! I also hope that the next time I work there are some uniform pants available. Today, I wore the largest size shorts I could find, they went to my ankles but were very baggy. I hadn’t thought to shave my legs before work, so being short finally paid off in that I could get away with wearing someone else’s shorts at pants!
